What is Nervos?
The Nervos Network is an open source public blockchain ecosystem and collection of protocols solving the biggest challenges facing blockchains today.
What sets the Nervos blockchain apart from other blockchains is that it separates the infrastructure of a crypto-economy into two layers.
The verification layer (layer 1) builds the basis of the system, as a root of trust and smart custodian. The goal is to build a chain as secure as the bitcoin blockchain, to be able to promise users a high degree of security and immutability. CKB (or layer 1) is where state is stored and defined, and layer 2 is the generation layer (or computation layer, these two terms are interchangeable) that processes most transactions and generates new states.
The second generation layer (layer 2) aims for fast transactions. A good analogy is the broad category of blockchain Layer two solutions that include for example the Lightning Network. With this layer, Nervos also aims to bring privacy features.
Layer 2 participants submit newly generated states to the CKB eventually at the time they deem necessary. If those states pass the corresponding verification performed by nodes in a global network, the CKB stores them in a peer-to-peer node securely.
Together, layer 1 (also: CKB) and the sum of all layer 2 protocols bring the typical features of blockchains: High certainty for transactions on a public ledger.
What are the benefits of Nervos’ layered architecture?
The layered architecture of the Nervos blockchain separates state and computation, providing each layer more flexibility and scalability. For example, blockchains on the generation layer (layer 2) may use different consensus algorithms. CKB is the lowest layer with the broadest consensus and provides the most secure consensus in the Nervos network. However, different applications might prefer different consensus scopes and forcing all applications to use CKB’s consensus would be inefficient. Applications can choose the appropriate generation methods based on their particular needs. The only time these applications will need to submit states to CKB for broader agreement is when they need to make these states common knowledge that has been verified by the CKB’s global consensus.
What is Nervos CKB?
The Nervos CKB (Common Knowledge Base) is the layer 1, proof of work public blockchain protocol of the Nervos Network. It allows any crypto-asset to be stored with the security, immutability and permissionless nature of Bitcoin while enabling smart contracts, layer 2 scaling and captures the total network value through its “store of value” crypto-economic design and native token, the CKByte.
How can I store my Nervos?
While exchanges are fast set-up storages, funds are out of the user’s control and can be hacked. Software and hardware wallets on the other hand offer the user to hold Nervos CKB on their own devices: Laptops, desktop or mobile phones. imToken offers a mobile wallet app to securely store your Nervos CKB as well as other currencies on your own phone.
